Gwen Moffat is a real 'pro', with well over thirty books in her stable.
This is another based in the Lake District where she lives, concerning a
shiftless and largely unemployed journalist, Michael Daynes, who lives
off his wife Sophie, who has inherited an old boat-house in the woods on
the lake shore. Her spinster godmother lives not far away, amid cats and
chickens and is very protective of Sophie, especially against her
sponging husband.
She discovers his infatuation with a young local girl and sees him off
with a shotgun. The situation becomes more complicated when a
suspicious man living in a caravan in the woods is burnt to a crisp, in
what soon turn out to be homicide.
Sophie vanishes, as does the girl-friend, with a plastic-bag corpse being
dislodged from the lake-bottom by the passing of the pleasure steamer.
A convoluted plot swings hither and yon, with rather over-repetitive
police interviews of all concerned. A classic 'what happened' rather than
a 'whodunnit' with a nice twist at the end.
