This is a real American 'action' book, and the fourth in the 'Jack Daniels'
series. Jack is Jacqueline Daniels, a forty-ish Lieutenant in the Chicago
Homicide Squad, apparently able to survive physical trauma that would
kill half a dozen lesser mortals. Someone with a hate for the Chicago
Police Department has decided upon revenge against the population
generally and the police in particular, with random attacks against the
city's food supply with a variety of poisons. He introduces these into
supermarket fruit, restaurant food and eventually graduates to mass
explosives.
Jack is put in charge of the investigation and becomes a specific target for
the villain, called the 'Chemist', who grows his own poisons in his
backyard greenhouse.
The story ends in a massive vehicle rampage involving a flatbed truck
filled with portable toilets stuffed with eight tons of explosive and is
undoubtedly a page-turning climax. The book is very well-written and is
witty and perhaps a little too near a possible reality to be comfortable.
