This is a collection of short stories covering many types of crime - the majority by present members of the Crime Writer’s Association, to which the book is dedicated and for which the author edits its monthly newsletter Red Herrings.
As there are no copyright acknowledgements in the front, as is usual with anthologies, I assume that these are all new stories, written specifically for this collection.
Many of the names are familiar and all except one are British, ranging from Joan Lock, Judith Cutler, Russell James, Natasha Cooper through to Martin Edwards and Peter Lovesey. There are also newer writers and overall it is a ‘wide-spectrum’ dose of British crime writing that doesn’t have a dud amongst them.
Obviously it is impossible to review an anthology story by story, but DSD’s introduction is an excellent overview of the crime-writing genre through the ages, a case being put forward for Sophocles' Oedipus the King as possibly being the first piece of crime fiction.
It’s a great ‘dipping-in’ book with thirty shots at getting the one that grabs you the most.
