Another thriller using the well-tried formula of CIA and MI6
skullduggery, a disenchanted former 'operative', government
conspiracies and a shooting on almost every page.
This is the third book using Jack Valentine as the unkillable hero
in Northern Ireland, though the 'troubles' come from other countries.
Well-written and this time using a novel plot, in which the CIA, with the
connivance of the Brits, try to retrospectively validate the lies of Tony
Blair and Bush about weapons of mass destruction as an excuse to invade
Iraq, by fitting out an old Russian plane as a chemical weapons
laboratory, then flying it to Iraq, where it is then conveniently discovered
in the desert.
The plan goes pear-shaped as the plane, complete with sarin, crashes into the Irish Sea en
route. A renegade MI6 boss organises strenuous
covert efforts to recover the debris to use as a blackmail tool against the
Yanks, but by various coincidences, Jack Valentine gets involved and
eventually frustrates them. A complex story of deceit, treachery, Russian
refugee smuggling, and another sunken mystery ship complete with sarin,
leads to repeated battles along the Ulster coast, in which mayhem and
corpses abound. There is even a senior barrister, Anthony Scribner QC,
who is also an assassin with a high-powered rifle - perhaps a little close in
name to a recent Chairman of the Bar Council.
A totally unbelievable tale, but no doubt enjoyable for those who like
details of sundry weapons and grenades, nocturnal gun-fights in dockside
warehouses and the casual slaying of almost everyone who comes within
range.
