The
50th Issue
Editor Geoff Bradley
Private Passions Guilty Pleasures
Writers, critics fans and CADS contributors
combine to celebrate the 50th issue of CADS
Compiled and Edited by Bob Cornwell
It
seemed like a good idea at the time. A number of crime writers, critics, fans
and CADS contributors were invited to celebrate the coming, in its 21st year
of publication, of the 50th
issue of CADS (Crime and Detective Stories, as (Geoff Bradley
always insists is its full title). 87 individuals re- sponded: from Aird (Catherine)
to Yorke (Margaret), from Berlins (Marcel) to Wopenka (Johan), from Adey (Bob)
to
Taylor (Bruce).
In these pages you'll hear about a 1913 Magnum that was neither gun, champagne nor a testosterone-inflated P.I. You'll read Natasha Cooper on Magersfontein Lugg, Julian Rathbone on Ross Thomas, Reginald Hill on murder in a Home for Fallen Women and about an ex jailbird whose next employer is the Norse god Woden.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. It looks even better now.
Bob Cornwell, a lifelong reader of crime fiction, has de- signed the covers for CADS since Issue 9. His Question- naire feature for CADS, with its set list of questions to the UK crime writers he finds most interesting, first appeared in Issue 16. His reviews, interviews and articles have appeared in CADS, on the Tangled Web site, and in Shots, Crime Time and Deadly Pleasures.
If he hadn't been up against a deadline, his
Private Passions (leaving aside-reluctantly-Chandler and Hammett) might have
included either Mary Kelly, Seicho Mat sumoto, Margaret Millar, John Bingham,
William McIlvanney, Arturo Perez-Reverte, Charles Willeford or Daniel
Woodrell. His Hidden Gem might have been Tom Kakonis. His Ones to Watch just
might have included Arnaldur Indridason, Sophie Hannah and Charlie Willams.
