Steel Rain
She is raising her cell phone to her ear, shaking her hair aside as she does so. And then he doesn’t see her anymore.
It comes like a sudden blast of fog, as if all the water vapour in the air has turned to ice, a giant’s breath blown across the thirty feet from sidewalk to sidewalk. He feels that exhalation brush over him, the needle-sharp crystals prickle his skin, his eyes sting in the second before he can get his arms up to protect his face.
Then the noise comes, the dull trump that he has heard on countless training videos...
Special agent Vincent Piper of the London FBI Field Office is a newcomer to this crazy, vibrant capital city. In his view it is dirty, inefficient and expensive and there’s an anger simmering just beneath its congested surface. He’s only here to try and patch up his marriage.
But when the city’s rage erupts into violence and his daughter Martha is murdered in a terrorist bomb attack. Piper realises he’s staying for as long as it takes. He knows who planted the lethal device: all he has to do is find him.
His search becomes entangled in the lives of two women who help him piece together his shattered life - Sarah, his daughter’s Canadian tutor, and the mysterious Englishwoman Celeste, who helped him pluck his dying Martha from the carnage.
But what exactly are their motives? Are they as straightforward as the trust he must invest in them? They have pasts, agendas and secrets of their own, but before he can find out. Piper has a man to kill...
