Paperback - Voyager (1999)
Moonseed
It started the night Geena and Henry broke up. What was that strange light in the sky? A new star? A comet? Neither. It was the death of Venus. As if to commemorate the bitter end of NASA's golden couple, Venus had exploded, showering the Earth with deadly radiation and bizarre particles.
Moonseed is the story of a menace that falls to Earth from an unimaginably distant past, pushing us to the brink of an extinction event unparalleled in our planet's history. Henry is the NASA geologist who strives to understand what is happening. Geena is the astronaut whose help he needs to make possible the greatest evacuation since Noah braved the Flood.
Moonseed is the first modern novel to do justice to the awesome terror and promise of cutting-edge science.

'Baxter offers Technicolor wide-screen catastrophe.' Daily Telegraph
'This year's great disaster novel' Daily Mirror
'A disaster movie on the page that's inventive and original.' Sunday Express
'Moonseed is a fine book, a gripping read, well researched and intelligent.' Focus
'You don't blow up the planet in the first reel unless you've got something really spectacular for the third. And Baxter does ... Moonseed is a terrific, full-featured apocalypse, with plenty of buttons to push for the techs and lots of lava.' Locus
'A suspenseful, high-tech, hard-science adventure from one of the best in science fiction' Science Fiction Chronicle
'Baxter is an acutely intelligent man, and his stories are driven by quite exceptional urgency of thinking' Washington Post Book World

THE WEB
A series of six interlinking virtual reality novels.
THE WEB is a unique series of novels aimed at 10 - 14 year-olds. Although each novel stands alone, they fire set in the same world and feature some common characters, bringing together children from as fair apart as India, America, Hong Kong, Greece, Spain and England in a series of adventures that span the limits of the real world and the endless worlds of virtual reality. And behind it all there is a villain with countless faces, whose plot is so evil, so far reaching, that it overshadows everything.
From its very beginning it has been a collaborative effort from a group of established and critically acclaimed writers, working together, swapping ideas, but keeping their own styles, creating a varied yet unified vision of the world tomorrow.
Background to the world in 2027
*The first black pope has just been elected as has the first black President of the United States.
*There is a Labour Government in Britain, led by Mr Ravi Sivarajan but all the parties are so close there is hardly any difference between them. The Royal family in England are much reduced. Charles III has died leaving King William, as yet unmarried, on the throne.
*India is prosperous, self sufficient for food and raw materials and entering a golden age. They are holding the 2028 Olympics in New Delhi.
*The US, China and the EU have co-operated to set up a permanently occupied moonbase with forty or fifty families living there and carrying out research. Physical access to the moon is via SSO (Single Stage Orbit) shuttle flights to a space station then shuttle trips down to the moon's surface.
*The panda, great white shark and the pilot whale are all extinct. Good news for wolves though - they are back in Russia, Central Europe and there's even a small colony in Scotland.

Voyage
Voyage takes place in a world that almost existed but never was. John F. Kennedy survived the assassination attempt in Dallas. From his, wheelchair in 1969, the former president sets NASA a new, daunting challenge: '...to continue the building of our great ships, and to fly them onward to Mars.'
His voice carries beyond the clamour of military and industrial lobbies keen to develop the Space Shuttle. Instead, Apollo flights continue, boosted by Wernher von Braun's cherished nuclear rocket. Both are high-risk technologies. ..
When the first Ares mission lifts off for Mars in 1986, it is both a triumphant climax and the end of a long saga of technical and human over-ambition. Ares carries three dedicated people, one of them a woman, who have sacrificed everything to achieve the single goal of reaching another planet: their stories weave through a decade of political drama leading to the transfiguring experience of a year-long journey away from Earth.
