It was your average kinda day in Turai. Elves were murdering Orcs, Orcs were murdering Elves, everyone was murdering Dwarves and anything that wasn’t nailed to the floor had been stolen, fenced and then stolen again.
Yep, business was booming, except for me. So when the word hit the street that the Sorcerers Guild were holding their convention downtown I felt as happy as an elf in a tree. Don’t get me wrong - I do magic like the next guy - but as far as sorcerers go, well, two’s company and three’s a crime-spree . .

'Funny and engaging. I laughed aloud' Starburst
‘Blindingly funny, deeply subversive Martin Scott has invented a new genre: pulp fantasy noir’ The Guardian
‘A pulp fiction hero par excellence’ SFX

It’s summer in the magical city of Turai and it’s hotter than Orcish hell. All that Thraxas, third-rate sorcerer, second-rate private investigator and first-rate layabout, is looking for is a bit of peace a quiet. But when one of his clients is arrested in his office for murder, even Thraxas has to act.
It should be a simple enough case. So why do rival bands of warrior monks keep turning up? And how did a life-size bronze statue of Saint Quatinius disappear into thin air? And what’s all this got to do with the dolphins and their lost healing stone?
Before long, Thraxas and his friends find themselves at the heart of another incredible case of sorcerous skulduggery and magical mayhem

It hasn’t been a good morning for Thraxas. A vindictive judge has just fined him almost every guran he has, and two old enemies have threatened his life. To cap it all, the rainy season has started and it’s wetter than a mermaid’s blanket in the magical city of Turai.
What Thraxas desperately needs is a winner in the big chariot race. And a job. Out of the blue, his old commander in the army turns up with the promise of both. The racing tip sounds a bit dodgy, but the job looks like a doddle - just locate some stolen property.
Trouble is, when he does, the commander is there too. Well, his corpse is. And someone is sorcerously tampering with the evidence to put Thraxas in the frarme. It’s time for serious investigating in the rain…

Winner of the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel of 1999
In the magical city of Turai, murder, mayhem and ruthless criminal brotherhoods are rife. The only people more corrupt than the politicians are the Royal Family. And the weather is awful. It’s down these mean, muddy streets that Thraxas, ex-soldier, failed sorcerer and epic drinker, ekes out a living as a private investigator. But when Princess D-u-Akai, third in line to the throne, employs him to look into a very delicate matter, it seems that his luck is about to change. And it does. A few hours later, he’s in jail - accused of murder.
Thraxas: a man of extraordinary courage, legendary strength and nerves of steel he isn’t, but his unique charm and very well-hidden talents are destined to make him one of the best-loved characters in fantasy fiction.
