The TV Series
HEARTBEAT is a top British television drama series made by Yorkshire Television. Transmission began in 1992 and since then it has been sold to more than 35 countries, being especially popular in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Scandinavia. One special feature is the 60’s music which supports the storyline, while the dramatic scenery of the North York Moors forms an impressive background.
The series has spawned a spin-off television programme – The Royal which is filmed in and around Scarborough and features a 60’s hospital, with Heartbeat characters occasionally making short appearances.

However, although you might be familiar with Heartbeat and The Royal on television, you may not know that the series is based on the books of Nicholas Rhea, who started writing his Constable stories following his time as a village policeman in the North York Moors during the 60’s. He had a beat just like Aidensfield and a Francis Barnett motorbike just like Nick's in Heartbeat. His 'customers' were very much like the characters in Heartbeat and many of the stories in his books mirror the incidents he experienced in his everyday work. See his bibliography for full details.
