Lying, Crying, Dying
Pascual barely exists in Barcelona, washed-up, dried out. Cadging a cigarette or a meal, scraping a living. It isn't much of a life, but at least it's an honest one.
For Pascual had been a terrorist: had joined the armed struggle, stormed off to fight oppression. But killing unarmed civilians wasn't his idea of a fair fight, so he went over to the enemy. His CIA case officer looked like a man who enjoyed a joke; Dan, from Mossad, had a face like cracked leather, two fingers missing from his left hand. Pascual became a legend in counter-terrorist circles; the man who broke the inner world of international terrorism wide open, selling out everyone he knew for some semblance of peace of mind.
Except one: Katixa. The only name he kept back: the only secret no one else knew. Now she too wants to get out; walking away with five million francs, diverted from an ETA kidnapping, to start again somewhere, far, far away. With Pascual.
But nothing is ever simple. For when betrayal is your stock in trade, how can you expect to trust anyone in return? The only answer for Pascual, as old enemies close in and passion blinds him, is to believe.
Believe, and fight for his very life.
